Conference Game on Senior Night

Red Bud faced off against Conference competitors, the Carlyle Indians on Friday, February 11th.

The Musketeers won the tip-off and managed to score right off the start as Nick Fehr grabbed an offensive board and put it back up for a pair. Red Bud then got a defensive stop to start the game. A few possessions later, Easton Lucht grabbed an offensive board and put it back up for two. Lucht then locked down his defender and stole the ball, laying it in the hoop for an easy 2. It seemed to be the Lucht show, as he scored yet another two-point bucket in the paint, this one being an and 1. Midway through the quarter, Logan Cathell passed a dime to Devin Hall in the paint for an easy pair. This made it an 11-0 to start the game. The Musketeer’s defense was locking down the Indians. Following the previous bucket for Red Bud, Fehr knocked down a three from the corner, assisted by Lucht. To end the quarter Hall took his defender to the rim to give the Musketeers a 16-8 lead at the end of the quarter.

Logan Cathell swatted the ball from his defender to start the second quarter. Cathell locked down his defender again, forcing a turnover. The Musketeer’s first points of the second quarter came from Hall’s bucket in the paint, assisted by Cathell. Red Bud continued to lock down Carlyle on the defensive end, giving themselves extra possessions to take advantage of. Towards the middle of the quarter, Sternberg connected on a floater from the short corner. With 2 and a half minutes to go in the 1st half, Hall threw a dime to Sternberg cutting to the basket. Hall was stacking his stats for the night as he got an offensive board and put back for a pair at the end of the half. The Musketeers ended the half with a 24-17 lead.

Lucht swiped the ball from his defender to start the 2nd half. Red Bud’s first points of the half came from Diewald’s dish to Cathell in the paint for 2. Following that bucket, Diewald knocked down a three from the wing. The Musketeers weren’t allowing any easy buckets for the Indians. They were getting defensive stops left and right. Midway through the quarter, Diewald continued his hot night as he knocked down another trey, assisted by Fehr. With 3 minutes left in the third quarter, Sternberg drove around his defender finding an open spot for an easy floater in the paint. On the next possession, Fehr knocked down a three from the wing, assisted by Diewald. Red Bud was battling and scrapping for the ball all game up to this point, and somehow the Musketeer’s lead was only 37-35 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

Red Bud’s first points of the 4th quarter came from Diewald’s three from the wing, assisted by Fehr. The Musketeers then followed the bucket with a defensive stop. On the next possession, Sternberg drained a three from the corner, assisted by Cathell. Red Bud got their third stop in a row after this bucket. Midway through the 4th, Sternberg hit a big floater from the free-throw line. He followed his previous bucket up with a perfect trip to the charity stripe. This extended the lead to 8 for the Musketeers. Red Bud continued to lock down on defense. They kept their lead above 7 for the last 3 minutes. Cathell knocked down 2 free throws with a minute and a half to go in the game. In the last minute of the game Sternberg, Diewald, and Cathell went a combined 6 for 6 at the line, 2 of those free throws coming from a Technical call against the Carlyle head coach. The senior squad for Red Bud was subbed out and given a standing ovation in the last 30 seconds of the game. Senior Bryce Donjon was subbed into the game and knocked down a 2 point bucket in the paint to secure the win for the Red Bud Musketeers. Red Bud won 57-45 against the Carlyle Indians.
