Fisher House Collection

On November 1, members of the History Club took a field trip to the Fisher House in St. Louis and Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. For those of you who do not know, the Fisher house is a “home away from home.” It is a place where family members of Veterans receiving medical care at St. Louis VA Medical Center can peacefully stay, free of cost, to be close to their loved ones.

The Fisher House receives donations for everyday items houseguests need. Three RBHS Social Studies teachers, Mrs. Dahm, Mr. Gillingham, and Miss Corbier, decided to contribute to the Fisher House Organization. They came up with the idea for each teacher to try to get as many donations as possible, and whoever lost received a pie to the face. The teachers battled it out and Mrs. Dahm came in first with over 250 items. Mr. Gillingham received second bringing in 154 items, and Miss Corbier came in third with 149 items.

When the Fisher House was informed RBHS would be donating around 600 items, they invited some students to take a tour of the Fisher House. Members of the History Club traveled to the Fisher House and hand delivered the items collected. They were then brought inside the Fisher House and took a detailed tour of the facility. They were shown the different rooms, and beautiful balcony overlooking the Mississippi River. As they were looking over the balcony, deer were spotted in the backyard; it was an awesome sight.

After visiting the Fisher House, they travelled to the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery where students walked around the cemetery and honored the fallen veterans. It was a cool experience getting to visit the cemetery. On the way back from the field trip, the History Club members decided to stop at Steak n Shake.

A few weeks after the trip, RBHS held an assembly for the whole school so Miss Corbier could receive her punishment. A member of our local VFW, Mr. Bob Doty, took a pie and smashed it in her face. She was covered in pie, and it was a funny thing to see.

Overall, the fundraiser for the Fisher House brought a fun time, where students enjoyed delivering the donations. They also viewed the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery and ended the trip with a delicious trip to Steak n Shake. It was a fun time helping a good cause and learning important history.
