Red Bud Defeats Freeburg in 2-2 Week

On Tuesday the Musketeers traveled to play the Valmeyer Pirates in their second and final matchup of the season. The Musketeers were in for a rough game from the very start. The Pirates hitting has done exceptionally well up to this point in the season and that trend did not stop in this contest. The Pirates left-handed heavy lineup showed an extremely good ability to hit the ball the opposite way, and to do it with authority. The only run scored by the Musketeers came in the fourth inning. Griffin Ziebold hit a sharp ground ball to the Valmeyer third basemen. The base runner on third, Blake Cowell, broke for the plate in an attempt to score. However the third baseman’s throw bounced in the dirt and hit the bat that was laying on the ground. This caused the ball to ricochet off the bat and allow Cowell to score. The Musketeers only tallied two hits in the entire game, and fell 11-1 to the Pirates.

On Wednesday the Musketeers traveled to Pinckneyville to take on the Panthers. Again, the Musketeers struggled to hit the ball. Struggling to hit the ball hard and in the gaps. The Musketeers sent Blake Cowell to the mound and he did not pitch well in this contest. He struggled to control his offspeed pitches and use them effectively. He also struggled with throwing strikes when they mattered most and slow down the running game for the Panthers when they reached base. The Musketeers did not score until the bottom of the sixth inning when Griffin Ziebold hit a triple to deep right center field. He was brought in to score on a Thomas White laser single to right field. This would be the only damage the Musketeers could do on offense and would lose the game 5-1.

The offense would not sleep much longer when they traveled to Dupo to take on the Tigers. Cole Steible took the mound in an attempt to get the Musketeers back on track, and he did just that. Heading into the fourth inning the Musketeers were looking hopeless at the plate. Already down 2-0 it looked like all hope was lost for the team. Until a fire was lit in the dugout and the bats came back to life. Exploding for a ten run inning. All the Musketeer hitters were mashing the ball hard to all fields. The beatdown did not end there because the Musketeers would follow up the the next inning with another huge inning that plated another seven runs. Along with the offensive firepower came the dominant force on the mound that was Cole Steible. Cole did not let the Tigers get any edge on offense, striking out 11 of 12 batters and pitched four innings. Alex Birchler came in for the final inning of the game and closed out the game. The Musketeers would easily cruise past the Tigers 17-2.

Friday was probably the most well played ballgame by the Musketeers all season long when they welcomed in the Freeburg Midgets. Griffin Ziebold took the mound for the Musketeers and he did not disappoint. Ziebold used his curveball to freeze hitters, and heated up the fast ball when needed to leave the Freeburg bats in the dust. Quickly down 1-0 the Musketeers were able to answer right back in the bottom half of the first inning. Cowell scored on a Steible sacrifice fly to tied the game at one after the play of one. The Musketeers did not score again until the bottom half of the fourth inning when White and Fithian both plated runs that came off of sacrifice flies. The Musketeers rode the momentum all the way to the end of the game behind Ziebold on the mound. Ziebold went a full six and two-thirds innings and was forced to be removed due to his pitch count limit. Birchler would enter the game and face one batter before sealing the game up. The Musketeers would win the game 4-2 against a good Freeburg team.

The Musketeers will keep their season rolling next week when they square off against the Nashville Hornets on Monday. They will face the Lebanon Greyhounds multiple times next week, meeting up with them on Tuesday in Lebanon and Thursday at home.
