Musketeers Pick Up Two Conference Wins

On Tuesday the Musketeers kept their season rolling along when they sent Thomas White to the mound to face the Marissa Meteors. White struggled to throw strikes at the beginning of the contest but was picked up by his catcher, Griffin Ziebold, who was able to throw out the runners that reached on walks and get out of the first inning unharmed. After that first inning, the Musketeers were on cruise control for the rest of the game. Neither sides had much traffic on the bases, nor were the Musketeers able to capitalize on the Meteors mistakes. In the bottom of the third inning, Marissa committed some costly errors that led to a 3-0 lead by the Musketeers. White was able to stifle the Meteors for the better half of the rest of the game and keep them off the board. Marissa would push one run across later in the contest, but it would not be enough to overtake the Musketeers. Red Bud would go on to win the game 3-1.
On Thursday the Musketeers welcomed in the Steeleville Warriors in a very important conference game. The previous time the Musketeers played the Warriors, they let the lead slip away late and would lose 7-3. Cole Steible took the mound for the Musketeers and was on point from the very first pitch. Steible did an excellent job mixing speeds and locations and was able to succeed on the mound all day long. In the bottom of the first inning, Steible laced a single to right field that scored Cowell who reached on a double to left field. The Musketeers snatched an early 1-0 lead. The Musketeers would not score again till the bottom of the fourth inning when they broke a 1-1 tie on a throwing error by the Steeleville pitcher that scored Doiron from second base. The Musketeers extended their 2-1 lead even farther on a Jeff Kern single that scored a pair of runs and gave Red Bud a 4-1 lead. Steeleville was able to tack on another run of their own in the top of the sixth inning, but the Musketeers would not budge any further after that. The game had a playoff-like atmosphere and was definitely the most intense game that the Musketeers had played in all season so far. The Musketeers won 4-2 backed by an incredible complete game by Steible on the mound.
On Friday the Musketeers traveled to Mascoutah to take on the Indians. The Indians were ready to go from the first pitch and the Musketeers were not. Red Bud trailed the Indians 4-0 after the completion of the first inning. The Indians lead would grow as large as 10-0 after four innings and put the Musketeers in danger of being short gamed. However, the Musketeers showed some fight in their team and did not go away so quickly. Cory Fithian scorched a double to the left-center gap and would later steal home on a wild pitch. The Musketeers held off the Indians for the rest of the game and even plated two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to bring the score to 10-3. However, this was not enough to fend off the Indians who eventually finished off the Musketeers 10-3 after seven innings. Red Bud’s season keeps on moving along next week when they take on the conference-leading Valmeyer Pirates on Tuesday. As the season enters the back half, Red Bud will look to try and keep all arms healthy as they near the playoff push.
