The Red Bud Musketeers improved to 4-2 last week with a road win in Dupo against conference rivals the Tigers. The Boys started strong, scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter while giving up a defensive TD to the Tigers to take a 14-7 lead. The Musketeers extended their lead to 21-7 during the second quarter, holding the Tiger offense in check to carry a 14-point lead into the half. Injuries played a major role in the contest. Musketeer standout Lucas Schwartzkopf left the game after suffering an ankle sprain. Quarterback Dylan Oliver was also roughed up but remained in the game.
Dupo fought back in the second half adding a touchdown in the third quarter to narrow the lead to 21-14. While the Musketeer offense struggled a bit, the Tigers’ defense held strong shutting down Red Bud throughout the second half. Meanwhile, the Musketeer defense played well, holding Dupo to two scores in the half. The Tiger’s final score came with under two minutes to play making the score 21-20 but when they missed the extra point, Red Bud took the slim one-point lead into the final moments of the contest. With about a minute remaining, Oliver navigated a first down, sealing the Tiger’s fate. Red Bud was able to run out the clock and secure the win. Oliver was 9 for 19 passing for 135 yards with a TD and interception, adding 54 yards on 4 carries. Gavin Baldwin led the Musketeers in rushing with 75 yards on 15 carries and caught 2 passes for 19 yards. Corbin Lang and Zach Manning had 2 receptions each for 49 yards and 46 yards, respectively. Sophomore Brayden Schlesinger had three catches for 21 yards. Freshman Danny Jackson led the defense with 11 tackles and an assist followed by Manning with 10. Landon Ruebusch had a tackle, an assist, and an interception. As it turned out, Brayden Koester’s extra point was the difference in the win, proving that every point counts; but this was truly a team victory. The Team was able to overcome some obstacles and hold on for the win,
The Musketeers continue conference play as they travel to Wesclin next week to battle the Warriors. The Warriors are 1-5 coming off a road win against Sparta last week and can not be taken lightly. Red Bud needs a strong win to remain undefeated in conference play for a shot at the playoffs. Make the trek north Friday night to support your team, kick-off is at 7:00.
