The Red Bud Musketeers traveled to Breese to take on the Central Cougars. Red Bud entered the game with a 1-1 record in non-conference play this season with many players missing due to injuries. With senior quarterback Dylan Oliver out with a shoulder injury the quarterbacking duties went to Landon Ruebusch. Lucas Schwartzkopf and Gavin Baldwin took the majority of hand-offs for Red Bud.
The Cougars came out fighting, scoring twice in the first quarter on two, one-yard TD runs to take an early 13-0 lead. Red Bud climbed back with a 65-yard touchdown sprint by #32 Gavin Baldwin. Baldwin has come into his own as a running back with his ever-present speed and newfound ability to run through would-be tacklers. Brayden Koester kicked the PAT to close the gap to 13-7 midway through the first quarter.
The Cougars “broke it open” in the second quarter, adding four touchdowns in the frame on three passes and a nine-yard sweep to make the score 41-7 at the half. Central scored their final TD on a 25-yard pass play in the third quarter, scoring 48-7. The Musketeers found the endzone twice in the fourth quarter scoring on a pass to Zach Manning and a 47-yard scamper by Baldwin; the final score was 48-21.
The Musketeers hit the road again this week to open conference play when they take on the Indians. Both teams are 1-2 in non-conference games thus far. Red Bud should have some players back healthy for this week’s contest. It should be an exciting game. Make the trip to Carlyle to support your team; kick-off is at 7:00.
