The Red Bud Musketeers were derailed last week by the Shells from Roxana in Red Bud.
The contest began with the Musketeers kicking to Roxana to start the game. The Shells took the ball set up their offense near their 40-yard line and quickly drove into Red Bud’s territory. On a second down run, the Shells scored on a 43-yard touchdown to open the scoring. The two-point play gave Roxana an early 8-0 lead. Zack Manning took the ensuing kickoff and was brought down after a strong return at the Musketeer 28-yard line but Red Bud turned the ball over on first down when Dylan Oliver’s pass was intercepted at the Roxana 40. The Shells moved the ball deep into Musketeer territory and scored on a 13-yard TD pass; the PAT made it 13-0. Red Bud again received the kick-off after the Roxana TD but was forced to punt. Kicker/punter Brayden Koester fielded a low snap and just got a low, line drive punt away. The Roxana return man fielded the kick at the Red Bud 40 and returned it for their third score of the quarter; the PAT made it 22-0. Gavin Baldwin returned the kick-off to the Musketeer 40-yard line where the Red Bud offense set up. With some strong blocking behind the line, Red Bud was able to advance to the Shells’ 45 when Oliver connected with a 45-yard pass play to Corbin Lange for a touchdown. The two-point play failed but Red Bud was on the board, trailing 22-6 at the end of the first quarter.
Roxana extended their lead to 29-6 on a 22-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter. The Musketeers took the kick after the TD to their own 35 but a dropped pass and an illegal procedure penalty forced a punt. The Shells moved the ball to the Red Bud 43 and completed a 40-yard pass to move the ball inside the 5-yard line. Two plays later, Roxana made it 3606 on a three-yard TD run and PAT. The Musketeers answered when Baldwin took the handoff and sprinted 82 yards for a touchdown. Koester’s PAT made it 36-13. After another Roxana score, Red Bud quarterback Dylan Oliver connected with receiver Zach Manning for a 34-yard TD strike; the two-point conversion failed and the score at the half was 43-19.
In the first possession of the second half, Dylan Oliver took a hit that sidelined him for the second half and will likely cause him to sit out this week as well. Oliver completed 12 passes in 16 attempts for 147 yards with 2 TDs and an interception. Sophomore Landon Ruebusch, the JV quarterback, entered the game to guide the Musketeer attack. Roxana scored a TD on a three-yard sweep to make the score 50-19 and another third-quarter score 57-19. To the Musketeer’s credit, they kept fighting until the end, scoring a touchdown on a pass play by Ruebusch to Manning to make the final score 57-26. Ruebusch finished the night with 112 yards passing with a TD and one interception.
The Boys travel to Aviston this week to take on Breese Central. The Cougars are 2-0 after wins against Highland at home in week one and Mater Dei last week. Central is always tough and will be ready while the Musketeers will be looking to get back in the win column. This is a winnable game with the team we have but the Boys will need to focus on the details and keep miscues to a minimum. Come out and support your team, kick-off is at 7:00.
