JV Musketeers Improve to 5-0

It has been a great start to the 2022 season for Red Bud. The varsity team has a 4-1 record. Not to be outdone, the JV team has quietly amassed a 5-0 record with a tho win at home Monday night against a tough Mater Dei team. Both teams came into the contest with a perfect 4-0 record, knowing that only one team would remain undefeated.

The scoring began with the Musketeers’ scoring a touchdown on the ground by running back Gavin Baldwin. The PAT was good and Red Bud was up 7-0. Mater Dei fought back scoring a TD of their own in the second quarter making the score 7-6 at the half.

The Musketeers extended their lead during the third quarter on a pick-six by sophomore Alex Wolter. The interception gave the Boys a 13-6 lead which they held until the fourth quarter.

At the 7:24 minute mark, on a third and long at their own 25-yard line, Musketeer quarterback Dylan Oliver handed off to Baldwin who swept around the left end and sprinted 75 yards for a touchdown. The score gave Red Bud a 19-6 lead and gave the Boys a bit of breathing room. The Knights made it close with a touchdown run in the fourth quarter to make the final score 19-14.

It was a big win for the team, proving that they are for real and can play with anyone. The irony is that Red Bud was scheduled to play Sparta’s JV squad but the Bulldogs were unable to field a JV team. Red Bud Athletic Director Dane Walters searched for a team and found that Mater Dei had a bye this week and was willing to travel to Red Bud to fill the hole in their schedule. The teams were well-matched and fortunate to have had the opportunity to have a productive evening.

Monday night the Musketeers return to their regularly scheduled program, hosting the Dupo Tigers. Admission is free and the concession stand will be selling Chick-fil-a sandwiches for $5. Come out and support your team. Kick-off is at 6:00.
