Musketeers Dominate On The Road @ Wesclin

The Red Bud Musketeers made it two-in-a-row last Friday night with a strong performance against the Warriors in Wesclin. Red Bud opened the scoring late in the first quarter when quarterback Jayden Birkner connected with Kobe Brosch on a 15 yard TD pass with just 28 seconds remaining in the frame. The PAT failed, but the Boys were up 6-0 and would never relinquish the lead.

The game turned into a Battle of the Defenses as both teams played to a scoreless tie through the second quarter as the score remained 6-0 going into the halftime break. The Musketeer coaching staff identified some weaknesses in the Wesclin defense and was able to make some adjustments during halftime to possibly take advantage of the Warrior defense in the second half of the game. It worked. Red Bud used the running game to drive to the Warrior two yard line and punched it in on a dive by AJ Trujillo for the touchdown; Sam Carroll’s PAT was good and Red Bud was up 13-0.

The Musketeer offense used a combination of running and passing to set up the next score on a 6 yard TD strike from Birkner to sophomore Easton Lucht. Birkner was 8 for 11 passing with 2 TD’s, ran for 47 yards and had an interception on defense. The extra point split the uprights making it 20-0, but the Boys weren’t through. As Wesclin worked to get on the scoreboard, the Musketeer defense remained strong. Kobe Brosch came up big with his second interception of the game, this time returning it 25 yards for a touchdown. The PAT failed, but the lead grew to 26-0. During the final frame, Red Bud added a 35 yard field goal to close the scoring making the final score 29-0. Bryce Amann, Derek Weiser, and Frank Ford led the defense in tackles with 5 each, Ford added a fumble recovery as well. Chase Ward was the leading rusher with 71 yards on 12 carries.

This week the Carlyle Indians come to town for the Musketeers’ home opener. The Indians lost to Freeburg last week at home and would love to get a win on the road. Red Bud would love to keep the string going and show the home crowd that the team is for real. You won’t want to miss the excitement. Come out and root for your team, kick-off is at 7 p.m.
