Girls’ Basketball Home Opener

On Tuesday, November 21, the Red Bud Lady Musketeers hosted the Valmeyer Lady
Pirates for their home opener. It was also the Musketeer’s first conference game of the season.
Red Bud knew they needed to play their game with composure.
In the first quarter, Red Bud came out strong and played great defense. The Musketeers
were also able to put points on the board with no problem. Sophie Richards put in two shots
from the post and was fouled multiple times, going two for six from the free throw line.
Mackenzie Schweizer also made two, two-pointers. Hope Guebert made a shot from the high
post and went one for two from the free throw line as well. Laura Juelfs went up strong for a
shot at the post and was fouled. She made both free throws, adding another two points to the
board. MaKenzie Harbaugh was also fouled on a shot after getting an offensive rebound and
made one of two shots from the free throw line. Red Bud was ahead 16-4 at the end of the
quarter.
The Lady Musketeers increased their lead in the second quarter by adding another
sixteen points to their score. Richards was knocking in shots left and right from the post,
contributing with eight points. Guebert and Sophia Koesterer both made a two-point shot. After
getting a rebound, Harbaugh put a shot right back up, adding another two points to the board.
She was also fouled twice and went one for two from the free throw line. Juelfs was fouled on a
shot as well and made one of two shots from the free throw line. Going into halftime, Red Bud
was leading 32-6.
In the third quarter, Red Bud scored another sixteen points just as they had did in the
previous two quarters. Richards went up strong and knocked in another two shots from the post.
Alyssa Heller also made a two-point shot from the post. Guebert and Harbaugh both sank a
three-pointer, contributing with three points each. Koesterer drove to the basket for a layup.
Makayla Whelan was fouled on a shot from the post and went two for two from the free throw
line. This put the score at 48-13 at the end of the quarter.
The Musketeers struggled some in the fourth quarter and were outscored 13-6 by the
Pirates. Heller made another two-pointer from the post. Schweizer also drove to the basket to
put two points on the board. Guebert also contributed with two points as well. Red Bud earned
their first conference victory of the season with a final score of 56-26.
Red Bud is scheduled to host Waterloo on Tuesday, November 28; travel to Lebanon on
Friday, December 1; and travel to Freeburg on Saturday, December 2.
