Holmes Carries Eagles to 9 Point Victory Over Red Bud
The Musketeer Varsity Men’s squad held their senior night Thursday evening against the Columbia Eagles. Columbia came hot out of the gate, going on a 10-4 run to begin the first. Red Bud’s offense did an exceptional job outsmarting Columbia’s full-court press in the first quarter, as Parker Van Dorn scored two buckets on open layups as a result of beating the press. Columbia was automatic from the free-throw line in the first, making all three on a fouled 3 point shot by Eagles guard Glenn Powers. Columbia’s Jackson Holmes was the main force for Columbia all night long, scoring 9 in the first quarter. The Eagles held a 15-8 lead at the end of the first. It seemed as if the Eagles were on pace to blow out the Musketeers midway through the second quarter, as they quickly extended their lead to 23-11. Devin Hall cut the lead down to 10 with a turnaround hook shot in the paint. Nick Fehr also got in on the scoring action with a deep 3 from the top of the key. It was Holmes once again showing that this was his game by scoring the final shot to end the quarter to give Columbia a commanding 36-20 lead. No matter how much they were down, the Musketeers had no quit in them on senior night. Cowell, Cathel, and Fehr all converted on field goals to begin the third quarter to try and stop the bleeding in order to stay in the game. Nick Fehr was once again automatic from beyond the arc, draining another 3 for Red Bud and cutting the lead to 10. Center Mason Ferrell nailed both free throws for Red Bud to end the third, as the Columbia lead dwindled to 42-34. Jackson Holmes took charge in the fourth to ensure the Eagles a win, finishing the game with 26 points. Red Bud’s offense brought them within 6 shortly into the fourth quarter, but the Eagles were quick to widen their lead. The Eagles went on to win the contest by a final score of 56-47.
