Musketeers Split During Another Rainy Week

After only playing one game against Steelville in the previous week, they were expected to have another week of rain cancellations. On Monday the Musketeers were able to sneak in a game against the Waterloo Bulldogs. The soggy environment forced both teams get warmed up faster than usual to start the game sooner before the storms moved in. This however did not play into the Musketeers favor. They looked as sloppy as the weather, throwing balls away, making bad throws, and overall not looking enthusiastic to play. The Musketeers faced a 6-0 deficit before anyone even picked up a bat. The Bulldogs pitcher was making quick work of the Musketeers, striking out eight of the first nine Red Bud batters. The lead for the Bulldogs grew to as large as 15-0. In the bottom of the fourth the Musketeers were in business though. They had bases loaded with only one out, with already one run across, Cory Fithian laced a double down the first baseline clearing the bases. Red Bud cut the lead to 15-4, however after a scoreless fifth they were short-gamed and the contest was over. Red Bud fell to the Bulldogs 15-4.

After a couple more rain cancellations, Red Bud was able to take on Belleville Althoff on Saturday morning. The Musketeers sent Thomas White to the mound to try and rebound from his last outing, and he delivered. White was outstanding with working the outer portion of the strike zone, ramping up his fast ball when needed, and using his forkball to make hitters look silly. In the third inning White was faced with a bases loaded jam on the mound. He induced a ground ball to third, where Charles Rednour made a strike to the plate to get the force out. Then the catcher, Griffin Ziebold, delivered a strike back to third where Cole Steible was covering the bag for the second out. Resulting in a crazy 5-2-6 double play to give the Musketeers momentum. White was able to strike the next batter out and get out of the inning. In the bottom half of the third the Musketeers had a bases loaded situation of their own. However they were able to make the most of their opportunities because Steible was able to bloop a base hit over the second baseman’s head to plate two runs. The Musketeers were not done scoring in that inning. With runners on second and third, White his a pop up to the center fielder. Birchler tagged up on the play and scored, Steible was digging for third when the first basemen cut the ball off and threw a wild throw over the third baseman’s head and was able to score. The Musketeers did their damage and were leading 4-0 after three. The rest of the game was quiet offensively, but the Musketeers on defense were making some noise. It seemed that every ball put in play by Althoff was made by the Musketeers. In the bottom of the sixth with two outs, Blake Cowell hit a single up the middle and proceeded to steal second base. Fithian followed up that at-bat with a single of his own to score Cowell and extend the lead to 5-0. White was able to complete the complete game shutout and propel the Musketeers to a 5-0 victory.

Red Bud is slated to play Wednesday through Saturday next week, with a home double header scheduled on Saturday against Wood River. The Musketeers now sit at 3-3 with a lot of the season left still to play.
