Service in Our School

You may have noticed that on January 24, 2018, some kids were missing from class. This is because the Geometry Advanced and the Sewing and Textiles classes teamed up on a project to help at need families and sick children in the hospital, by making a quilt. The students in these classes worked this day to add seam allowances, pick out fabric, and to cut out fabric for the quilt blocks. The Geometry Class was required to construct a 12 inch by 12 inch quilt block. The class had to come up with unique designs and construct them using a compass and a straight edge ruler. Sewing and Textiles class has the job of sewing together the fabric to make the designs. There will be 36 blocks laid out in a 6 block by 6 block pattern. The overall size of the quilt will be about 72 inches by 72 inches. The quilt will be auctioned off and sold to the highest bidder at the spring band concert and art show. Last year the quilt was sold for around $500. The proceeds will go to buying fleece to make tie blankets. These blankets will go to children in the hospital. The rest of the money raised will go to a family that is in need, in our community. Mrs. Wiegand has been helping organize this community service project for the last two years. Mrs. Brundage had been helping with this project two years before Mrs. Wiegand took over. Mrs. Little has been involved in this service project for the last four years. I believe this project is a wonderful opportunity for high school students to learn to construct quilt blocks, learn to sew, do a little community service, and even have a bit of  fun.
