Musketeers Spoil Berger’s Homecoming

Last Tuesday the Musketeers kept their season rolling when they welcomed in the Lebanon Greyhounds. Former Red Bud head basketball coach and current Greyhounds coach, Curt Berger, was making his return to Red Bud for the first time since resigning. In the first quarter the Musketeers were slowed down by the Greyhounds matchup zone defense. Their pace allowed them to run their half court sets easier, and swing the ball around the perimeter with ease. Shaye Carter took over the game early by converting high percentage jumpers, and scoring near the basket. Carter scored seven points in the opening quarter. Musketeers led 13-11 after the first quarter. In the second quarter the game was even slower paced due to more defensive pressure from both sides, and neither team shooting the ball particularly well. Red Bud took a 21-18 lead into the locker room at halftime. At the beginning of the second half the Musketeers began to pull away from the Greyhounds. Griffin Ziebold nailed a pair of three point field goals to help ignite the Musketeer offense. They continued to battle on both ends of the floor and even built up a 34-23 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Musketeers were able to extend their lead to as large as 13 points before the Greyhounds began to chip away and come back into the game. Red Bud’s lead shrank to as low as five before Blake Cowell on back-to-back possessions was able to steal the ball from the Greyhounds, and score a pair of fastbreak layups for the home team. These buckets squashed Lebanon’s momentum and helped seal a 45-38 victory for the Musketeers. Ziebold led the Musketeers in scoring with 16, followed by Carter who notched a season high 11 on the season. Red Bud needs to win their final three home games if they have any hopes of winning their conference title.
