Lady Musketeers Celebrate Senior Night

On Monday, January 29, the Red Bud Lady Musketeers traveled to New Athens to take
on the Lady Jackets. The Musketeers were looking to get their twentieth win of the season. In
order to do this, they knew that they had to play with much intensity and excitement.
In the first quarter, Red Bud came out and contested with New Athens. Although the
shots were not falling for the Musketeers, they managed to hold the Jackets by playing good
defense. Sophia Koesterer started the game off by sinking a three-pointer. MaKenzie Harbaugh
drove to the basket and put in a two-point shot. Sophie Richards made a two-point shot as well
after making a strong post move. She was also fouled on a shot and went two for two from the
free throw line. At the end of the quarter, Red Bud was leading 7-6.
The Lady Musketeers were lagging in the second quarter and were outscored by the
Lady Jackets sixteen to eight. Koesterer knocked in her second three-pointer of the night to add
another three points to Red Bud’s score. Harbaugh also put in a three-point shot. Richards
continued to battle at the post and was fouled on a shot. She went two for two from the free
throw line. Going into halftime, Red Bud was down 15-22.
In the third quarter, Red Bud did not hang their heads. They came out ready to make the
game theirs by playing with much intensity. Hope Guebert put in two, two-point shots. She was
also fouled on shot and made both free throws. Koesterer and Richards were both fouled on a
shot as well and both went two for two from the free throw line. Alyssa Cowell also contributed
with two points. Red Bud was falling 27-30 at the end of the quarter.
The Musketeers were determined to outscore the Jackets and steal the lead in the fourth
quarter. Red Bud played strong defense, which kept New Athens from putting many points on
the scoreboard. Richards made a shot from the post. She was also fouled several times and
went four for eight from the free throw line. Laura Juelfs also knocked in a two-point shot from
the post. She was fouled on a shot as well and made one of two free throws. Claire Grohmann
drove to the basket twice to put another four points on the board for the Musketeers. The Red
Bud Lady Musketeers captured their twentieth win of the season against New Athens with a
final score of 40-35.
On Thursday, February 1, the Red Bud Lady Musketeers hosted Marissa for Senior
Night. The Lady Musketeers were hoping to run the Lady Meteors to the ground after a close
matchup with them earlier in the season.
In the first quarter, Red Bud struggled to knock in their shots. However, their competitive
defense kept Marissa from scoring much as well. Richards made the only shot of the quarter by
making a strong post move and putting in a two-point shot. Red Bud was down 2-4 at the end of
the quarter.
The Lady Musketeers added another six points to their score in the second quarter.
Richards continued to battle at the post and knocked in another two-point shot. She was also
fouled twice and went one for three from the free throw line. Koesterer was fouled twice and
went one for three from the free throw line as well. Grohmann was also fouled and made both
free throws. At halftime, the score was tied at 8-8.
Red Bud was lagging in the third quarter. They struggled again to knock in many shots
and only put three points on the scoreboard. Koesterer drove to the basket and made a
two-point shot. Juelfs was fouled on a shot and went one for two from the free throw line. Red
Bud was falling 11-14 at the end of the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Musketeers were determined to steal the game away from the
Meteors. Red Bud went on a run and outscored Marissa seventeen to six. Koesterer sank a
three-pointer and made two, two-point shots to put seven points on the board. Grohmann also
sank a three-point shot. Richards fought hard at the post and drew several fouls. She went three
for six from the free throw line. Juelfs also was fouled twice and made one of four free throws.
Harbaugh and Guebert were also both fouled once. Harbaugh went two for two from the free
throw line and Guebert went one for two from the free throw line. The Red Bud Lady
Musketeers defeated Marissa with a final score of 28-20 to capture second place in the
Kaskaskia Division of the Cahokia Conference.
Red Bud is scheduled to travel to Pinckneyville to compete against the Lady Panthers in
the first game of the IHSA Regional Tournament on Tuesday, February 6.
