Musketeers Struggle Against Former Conference Opponents

On the Tuesday before the long Christmas break, the Musketeers played host to their former conference rival, the Wesclin Warriors. The Warriors came into Red Bud with a familiar roster as last year, and possessed a solid perimeter shooting skill set. Unfortunately for the Musketeers, this game was well over in the first few minutes of the contest. The Warriors from the opening tip were on a mission, to destroy the Musketeers. Constantly putting pressure on the Musketeers, and forcing the home team into committing turnovers. Wesclin would proceed to capitalize on those extra possessions and score from all facets of the game. Nailing threes and attacking the offensive glass, the Warriors were clicking from all cylinders early. The only field goal the Musketeers had in the opening quarter came from a Blake Cowell corner three pointer toward the end of the quarter. At the end of the first quarter the score was 22-4 in favor of the Warriors. The second quarter was more of the same, but the Musketeers were able to break some of the Warriors pressure and push the ball up the floor. Even with the progress on breaking the pressure, the score was still a large 12-36 deficit at halftime. In the second half, the Musketeers began to put the ball in the hoop at a more consistent clip than in the first half. Red Bud was able to get to the hoop with a bit more ease, and even made a couple of three point field goals. Blake Cowell led the Musketeers in scoring with ten, closely followed by Griffin Ziebold with nine. The effort was not nearly enough as the Musketeers got stomped out at home 56-33.

On Friday, the Musketeers took on another former conference rival when they traveled to Freeburg to take on the Midgets. The first quarter went a bit more smoothly than on Tuesday, as the Musketeers were able to make some shots early. Caleb Riechmann and Jayden Birkner both completed shots from the field in the opening segment. The Musketeers were able to squeak out to an early lead, not before they hit an offensive wall. The Midgets then proceeded to push the ball in transition up the floor and hit some three pointers. The Musketeers trailed 30-18 at halftime. In the second half the Musketeers were not able to catch up to the Midgets. Red Bud was able to close the lead to 9 toward the end of the third quarter, but unable to get over that hump and catch them. Griffin Ziebold had a three point field goal, and a pair of driving layups in the half. Blake Cowell also contributed a baseline floater and three point field goal in the half. The Midgets continuously were able to counter any momentum the Musketeers had attempted to gain by draining shots of their own. The Musketeers eventually fell to the Midgets 53-38. Griffin Ziebold led the team in scoring with 16 , followed by Blake Cowell with eight.

After a tough week of basketball, the Musketeers fall to 7-4 on the season. The Musketeers will enjoy a long, ten-day, holiday break before they open up their second half schedule at Valmeyer to take on the Pirates. They previously defeated the Pirates 44-41 at home.
